Jobs, Technology Take Center Stage During Manufacturing Day 2018
October 15, 2018
Nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will likely be needed and 2 million are expected to go unfilled due to the skills gap over the next decade, according to The Manufacturing Institute. Those are some heavy numbers weighing on the industry.
In an effort to help close that gap and inspire the next generation of manufacturers, Miller Fabrication Solutions joined manufacturers across the United States by participating in the annual Manufacturing Day®. The goal of Manufacturing Day 2018 is to address common misperceptions about manufacturing and educate the general public about the many facets of manufacturing. Celebrations typically involve plant tours with Q&A opportunities and light refreshments, while Miller also opened a job fair to introduce the wide array of current positions available at Miller. Interested candidates could talk directly to hiring personnel and apply onsite during the event.
“This year’s Manufacturing Day really had two purposes for Miller: continue to show the technological advances we’ve made and give folks the full opportunity to consider a manufacturing career with us,” says Eric D. Miller, president of Miller Fabrication Solutions. “By giving the public an inside look at our plants as well as access to our hiring team, Manufacturing Day provided ample opportunity to showcase all that manufacturing has to offer students, job seekers, local businesses and other community members.”
The guided tours at Miller’s Manufacturing Day included live demonstrations of various forms of metal fabrication, such as part leveling with the ARKU FlatMaster® 120, robotic and manual welding, machining, coating and mechanical assembly. Attendees could also experience a virtual reality (VR) simulation of working at Miller Fabrication Solutions. Students from local school districts, Purchase Line and Kane, vocational school Venango Vocational Technology Center, and representatives from local businesses Brookville Equipment Corp., Komatsu and Phoenix Rehab were all in attendance.
